The Bible states that there is only ~6000 years of history, (see
"Biblical Time Chart"), yet astronomically we think the universe is
~15 billion years of history. Overall, this issue is very murky with no
solid hypothesis that seams to fit all the scientific and Biblical facts.
The best explanation I've come across is in "6 24Hr Days". The
key important Biblical aspects on this issue are:
 | There are 6 special days
of creation before our current ~6000 years of history. How different these
days were is very difficult for us to ascertain. |
| There is a potential "gap" in time alluded to between verses 1
and 2 in Genesis 1, before the start of the initial 6 special days of
creation. |
| The Bible several times
talks about God stretching the heavens. |
| There are good scientific studies showing light has been slowing
down, (seeing "Light Slowing"). |
| " Puzzle 1" and " Puzzle 2" both show
that modern scientists still don't have a solid hypothesis about the universe that fit the
facts. |
| Earth before was quite different before the world wide "Flood",
a difference that is very hard for us to contemplate. |
| The "Flood" was of epic proportions, and it happened rapidly and
as did its retreat. This type of flood would cause incredible scaring,
rapid layering, and bizarre geographic features. |
| Scientist have been able to simulate a rapid movement of Earth's platonic
plates that fit the general aspects of a world wide flood scenario, followed
by an ice age. |
| Many of the layering and canyon type geographic features we observe
today have been duplicated in just hours or days on a much smaller scale
recently at at Mount St. Helens. |
Overall, be careful in staking a strong position on specifically how and what
happening during the first 6 special days of creation, other than God created the
universe, Earth, and mankind in that period; this is what is important! I
can almost guarantee that if you look hard, you will discover that every scientific
model of the early universe and Earth, has its share of scientific puzzles that
just don't fit in.
